The Different Types of EV Chargers
When it comes to electric vehicle (EV) charging, there are a few different types of chargers that can be installed in a home garage. Depending on the type of EV one has, the type of charger needed may vary. The main difference between each level of EV charger is how fast they are able to refill the battery.
Level 1 EV Chargers - The most common type of charger is Level 1, which utilises a 120-volt alternating current (AC) outlet. A Level 1 charger is basically just a portable charger, think of them like a giant laptop charger as they just plug into the wall. They add around 10km of range per hour of charge. These are ideal for short trips or errands as they provide an ample amount of power if charged overnight for 8-10 hours. The downside to this type of charger is that it takes much longer to charge an EV than some other chargers available.
Level 2 EV Chargers - A Level 2 charger is fast-charging with 240 volts AC and offers around 40km per hour of charge depending on the device used. This makes them excellent choices for overnight charges while at home or during long trips such as road trips where the car needs more power quickly. They are the best and only real option for home EV charging setups at the moment due to a few factors. Mainly because homes are connected to the grid and that only allows for AC electricity, whereas Level 3 uses DC so is not compatible with residential properties.
Level 3 EV Chargers - These are currently not suitable for residential settings as they are not compatible with 240v AC electricity that homes provide. They are only for commercial and industrial applications and even then, they require a lot of modifications to the electrical system to install. As of now, they are both not practical and too expensive to set up, even for commercial situations, but in the years to come, this should change.
